With any new purchase, we want to ensure we get the maximum life out of the product. Within the tarp industry, there are many ways that you can aid the prevention of the tarp deteriorating prematurely; we have outlined a few of these trade secrets below.

1. ASSESS THE AREA

Before fitting your new tarp, assess the area. Look for sharp edges that may puncture the material and remove or conceal them. This will be vital for the lifespan of the tarp during times of inclement weather.

2. PRE-FIT THE TARP

Once you have prepped the workable area, lay the tarp in place before securing. This will make certain that the tarp fits your requirements and will allow you to ensure there are sufficient tie down points available.

3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FIXING AID

If you are intending to use your tarp outdoors throughout all seasons, go for a fitting that allows the tarp a small amount of movement such as a Ball Bungee. Our ball bungees will secure your tarp in place, however the elasticized bungee cord will also allow the tarp to move slightly in the wind, putting less pressure on the grommets and in turn, helping the tarp last longer.

The ball bungees will also be the best option if you are going to be handling the tarp frequently and require a simple fitting that can be put on and taken down without fuss.

For covering loads during hauling, or for securing items in storage, our Poly Rope is a great low cost accessory. The rigid rope will ensure that the tarp remains in place during extended journeys, keeping the haul beneath it dry and safe.

4. USE AS MANY GROMMETS AS POSSIBLE

This is ultimately the key factor as to whether your tarp lasts one week, one month, or one year. Secure the tarp in place with as many grommets as physically possible. The main reason why a tarp degrades is due to excessive force being put on the grommets causing them to pull out and tear the material. This is not a defect with the tarp, but an error regularly made during installation.
Securing the tarp at closer intervals on all four sides, will distribute the force on the tarp more evenly and thus allowing the grommets to effectively hold the tarp in place.
